How we all react PDF Print E-mail
How we all react when the mention of the word Meningitis is mentioned is unbelievably scary. Meningitis is an illness that we all fear deep down especially for parent`s of children. This can be a killer disease if not treated on the spot.Being familiar with what this virus is all about may help you understand a little more on it. Meningitis is an inflammation of the meninges, which is the lining that protects the brain and spinal cord.

You will find that it is nearly always caused by an infection, usually by bacteria (bacterial meningitis) or a virus (viral meningitis). In some rare cases it can be triggered by a fungus or parasite.

Adults no matter their age are not exempt from catching Meningitis but it is more commonly known to occur in young children under the age of 5. As stated earlier we all live under threat of this virus and people with compromised immune systems, such as carriers of HIV or AIDS, are also at an even greater risk.

If you are in doubt as to what the symptoms are - then you should go along to your local clinic and pick up a free leaflet which will explain all you need to know.

The symptoms of meningitis are very much similar for both bacterial and viral forms of the disease. Signs to look out for - are that of fever or a chill, headache, sensitivity to the eyes under light, vomiting. With some symptoms it can affect the patient into a state of delirium and confusion (uncommon) stiff neck, Irritability and drowsiness also.

Younger children or little babies may show discomfort in other ways where their symptoms may include whimpering and crying in a high-pitched screeches - they may also have difficulty in waking and feel lethargic when awake

Other things to look out for are if the baby shows uneasiness with being held or cuddled or even holding a blank stare as if staring into space so as to speak. Check for high fever/cold hands and feet. Loss of appetite can also be a sign - but do not worry because this can happen if the baby is teething or just feeling unwell in general.

Meningococcal meningitis can often cause a distinctive rash to appear. This rash is the result of a form of septicemia (infection in the bloodstream); this is a serious and potentially fatal condition. Seek medical attention immediately if you have concerns regarding your health.
